My style has evolved so much since I started sharing it on this blog. One bit of surprise is how much I love incorporating retro elements. Normally, I wear gingham in a classic way but I was feeling retro when I took these photos. This dress is really sweet so I wanted to shake it up with cool sunglasses and a quirky bag. I’m sad to be hanging up my summer dresses for the season but I guess it’s time to move on with the year. On the subject of time, my son Lucas is 7 years old today. Seven years is a very long time to be going so quickly. But gone are the baby years and I have a little boy standing in front of me lately. I’m afraid that the next time I blink, I might have a teenager on my hands!

My little one Nixon sees the world in shapes. Sometimes it’s the only way he communicates. This look is inspired by a book that I borrowed from the library to read with him. There are no words in this book. Only photographs of scenes of daily life showing that in fact, we live in a world of shapes. So many wonderful shapes! As parents, we’re focused on teaching our children about the world but sometimes, it’s the other way around. Since I became a mom, I’ve been learning from my boys to add shapes, colors and more art to my life. My favorite way is through the outfits that I wear.

I can’t wait to share this look with Nixon. Circles, triangles, diamonds and lines of all kinds! I started with two basics in bold patterns, a striped tee (love this sweater for fall) and the cutest polka dotĀ chinos. Basics that are fun and comfortable to wear are my absolute favorites. To complete my lesson in shapes, I added a wicked pair of angular sunglasses and a bucket bag covered in diamonds.
