Review: Gucci Dionysus Shoulder Bag

I tend to splurge on handbags and shoes because I believe they have the power to elevate an outfit. For these investment pieces, I’m going to provide a more detailed review because I think a splurge requires more justification than, it’s so cute! (or does it?!)

My latest handbag acquisition is the Gucci Dionysus shoulder bag. I didn’t love this bag immediately but it kept catching my eye when I saw other women carry it. The ornate horseshoe, thick chain strap and structured shape make for a flashy little handbag. My view on handbags is that if you are going to spend a lot of money, it had better stand out! The overall vibe is fancy and glamorous with hints of vintage and edgy. It’s a high fashion bag for sure. The best part is the quality of this bag, which I think is on par with popular Chanel bags for half the price.

Size and Storage

The shoulder bag comes in three sizes – large, small and mini. I chose the small size, which is approximately 11 x 7 x 3.5, because it fits my essentials easily without being too bulky. I can store a wallet, phone, keys and small makeup bag with ample room for extras like sunglasses. On the outside, there is a small pocket in the front for flat items like show tickets, passports, etc. Inside the bag, there are two roomy compartments divided by a zippered pocket.

In addition to the large, small and mini shoulder bag sizes, there are wallet-on-chain and clutch options if you are looking for something more compact. I love that there are different sizes to suit different carrying needs.

Color Options

The color options are even more abundant than the size options! I love the richness of the suede and the rose color provides a pop of color while remaining fairly neutral. In suede, I’ve seen rose, black, taupe, blue, red and pink. The bag also comes in the Gucci logo print with the option to add pops of color or pretty florals. If you want to make a bigger statement, the bag comes in some gorgeous prints and quirky embellishments too (love!).

Style Tips

This bag is dressy, especially if you go with suede. The metal details are fancy, the shape is highly structured and the size that I have cannot be worn casually as a crossbody. It can only be worn as a shoulder bag (see here), top handle (see here) or held like a clutch (see here). For these reasons, this bag looks best with polished looks. It’s absolutely possible to dress it down with jeans but I would add a silk blouse, lace top or blazer and dressy looking shoes (no flip flops) to complete the look. I am not strict about matching metal tones but if you were to add something large and metallic (like mirrored sunglasses), I would try silver tones rather than gold because the silver hardware on this bag is prominent.

In sum, the Gucci Dionysus is a stunning piece of handbag art that looks fabulous with dressed up looks. The style is distinctive but classic enough to enjoy for many years to come. And for a splurge bag, I think the price point is just right.

Shadow: Silk Tank and Block Heel Sandals

Hanro Silk Tank c/o | Zara Skirt and Blazer
Coach Mini Rucksack | Steve Madden Carrson Sandals (lower heel 1, 2)
Dior Reflected Sunglasses (save)

A silk tank instantly dresses up an outfit and I love how this blue one elevates this breezy wrap skirt. I added a slouchy blazer (I can’t stop wearing this one!), structured backpack and block heel sandals to create a dressy yet relaxed vibe that would be perfect for a brunch date with the girls, especially one involving mimosas. Lots of mimosas!

Bell: Camo Vest and Denim Midi Skirt

Madewell Top | J. Crew Jacket (sleeves cut off) | ASOS Denim Midi Skirt
Gucci Dionysus Bag (+colors 1, 2, 3, save) | Elizabeth and James Pumps
Dior Reflected Sunglasses (save 1, 2)

The bell shape of this denim midi skirt makes this one a bit of a drama queen. Add buttons and a frayed hem and it just might be the coolest denim skirt you will find all season! I paired it with my favorite casual top, which is as comfy as it is cute, and a camo vest that I made from an old jacket by cutting off the sleeves. Snip snip.

Layers: Sweater Cape and Fringe Details

Hanro Sweater Cape c/o | Madewell Sweater (love 1, 2) | Zara Jeans (similar 1, 2, 3)
Chloé Faye Bag (love, save) | Sam Edelman Belinda Boots (+sizes, black, open toe)
Dior Reflected Sunglasses (save 1, 2) | Nordstrom Scarf (love 1, 2)

Living in Los Angeles, I’m always looking for good light layers. The mornings are cold and the evenings are chilly, even in the spring and summer. I love how this cape is so easy to throw on over jeans and a sweater (or long sleeve tee) and it adds style while providing warmth. The fabric is soft and light and the color is perfectly neutral for the warmer months. I added my “Elvis” scarf and fringe booties for some flair and now, I am ready for those dropping temps in the evenings!

Celebrating Mother’s Day with My Girls

I got to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend in Palm Desert with my family. Our friends joined us to create a giant party crew of six families and the moms were able to sneak away for a boozy brunch, massage and tons of laughs! It couldn’t be any more perfect than that.

I’ve always been blessed with the presence of wonderful women in my life. My mom was a single mom who worked tirelessly to support me and my sister and she showered us with love and affection to counteract any void from growing up without a dad. She was my first example of how a woman should be – independent, hard working, responsible and loving.

My girlfriends are inspirational too. I met most of them when I was young and silly and that gave me the opportunity to witness a beautiful metamorphosis in which sweet girls grew up to be kind, creative and capable women.

I admire my friends who have the heart to adopt a little boy from China and create a loving home for him. Friends who take the initiative (and risk) to hit the pause button on a law career to work in a kitchen. Friends who are moms with demanding careers who manage to enjoy action-packed weekends centered around their children. Friends who have the guts, determination and energy to chase dreams and build new careers, even if that means waking up at 5am every morning to get the kids ready for school and get to work on time.

They are thinkers, do-ers, fun-loving gals. Best of all, they are kind, considerate and extremely generous through words and actions. I feel fortunate to be surrounded by these gals and hope to meet more inspirational women on my journey. :)
